Before you even leave the house, perform a thorough bike check. Ensure your tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread. Check your brakes, gears, and chain for proper function. Lubricate your chain as needed. A pre-ride bike check can prevent unexpected mechanical issues during the event.
A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. It’s your first line of defence in case of a fall. Ensure your helmet fits snugly and comfortably, covering your forehead and temples adequately.
Choose comfortable and weather-appropriate cycling gear. A base layer will wick away moisture, while a cycling jersey will provide comfort and aerodynamics. Cycling shorts with padding will prevent saddle soreness. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
Pack plenty of energy bars and other easily digestible snacks to maintain your energy levels throughout the ride. Consider your individual needs and preferences. Experiment with different options during training rides to find what works best for you. Don’t forget, we provide feed stations along the route with drinks, pastries, sweets and more!
Dehydration can significantly impact your performance. Carry plenty of water and consider using a hydration pack or bottle cages to stay hydrated. Electrolyte drinks can also help replenish essential minerals lost through sweat. Again, our feed stations can help with this.
Download the GPX files provided for your chosen route and consider using a GPS device or cycling computer to help you navigate the course. This will ensure you stay on track and help you explore the route with confidence. Of course, we also ensure that routes are well-signed so that you can keep your eyes up and your focus strong.
Even on warm days, temperatures can drop significantly, especially during descents. Pack extra layers, such as arm warmers, leg warmers, and a lightweight jacket, to adapt to changing conditions.
Due to the events being held on open roads, there is a minimum age of 17 to participate in all Wild Deer cycle events.
