Gravel riding tips and essentials

To fully immerse yourself in the world of gravel riding, it’s essential to have the right gear and knowledge. Here are some tips and essentials to help you make the most of your off-road adventures.

Essential gear:

Off road bike: Although our events are Gravel Rides, the routes are suitable for any off road bike including CX, Mountain Bikes and Gravel Bikes. We recommend a sturdy bike with wider tyres is essential for navigating rough terrain. Look for a bike with relaxed geometry, durable components, and multiple mounting points for your computer etc.

Comfortable clothing: Opt for moisture-wicking, breathable clothing that allows for freedom of movement. Consider investing in cycling jerseys, bib shorts, and a well-fitting helmet to ensure comfort and safety.

Helmet/Cycling Hat: All of our Grave Rides require a cycling hat/helmet. A well-fitting helmet should be level so that it sits just above your eyebrows and covers your forehead.

Bike computer: A bike computer can track your ride’s performance, including distance, speed, and elevation. Our routes are well signed so a computer is not essential.

Hydration pack or water bottles: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on longer rides. A hydration pack or water bottles can keep you hydrated throughout your adventure.

Nutrition: Fuel your body with energy gels, bars, or other snacks to maintain your energy levels. Our feed stations will help you stay on top of your game.

Tips for gravel riding

Cornering – When cornering on gravel, remember to lean the bike into the turn while keeping your body relatively upright. This technique, often borrowed from mountain biking and cyclocross, helps maintain control and stability. Look where you want to go, focusing on the line you want to take. Avoid staring at obstacles, as this can lead to unintentional steering towards them.

Body position – To improve your bike handling skills, consider watching videos and tutorials on mountain biking and cyclocross techniques. These disciplines share many similarities with gravel riding and can provide valuable insights.

Bike handling– Remember to stay loose and relaxed on the bike. Avoid tensing up, as this can lead to jerky movements and loss of control. Keep your knees and elbows soft to absorb shocks and maintain balance. Experiment with different hand positions on the handlebars, using the drops for descents and the tops for flats and climbs.

Practice makes perfect – Practice is key to improving your gravel riding skills. Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with different techniques. By consistently practising, you’ll gain confidence and become more proficient on the gravel.

By following these tips and equipping yourself with the right gear, you can confidently explore the world of gravel riding and enjoy unforgettable adventures.
